Basic information about what a VCIO is, and what VCIO.IN is.
What is a VCIO
A VCIO is an experienced IT professional - ideally with an in-depth understanding of business strategy and technology, who serves as a part-time "chief information officer" of a small or medium-sized business that otherwise could not afford or would not need a full time executive to hold the position. Normally a VCIO is hired as a consultant (i.e. an expert retained on contract), but serves as a member of a company's executive management team - though they may or may not serve on the company's board of directors.
The objective of a VCIO is to align the company's information technology strategy and spending with the overall business objectives of the company with all or most of the benefits associated with adding another top level executive. A VCIO may also be involved with setting up a process flow for procurement and deployment of information technology.
VCIOs normally serve several companies and do not engage in day to day management of a company's IT staff or other resources.
Why shoud you care
The overhead of a VCIO is abysmally low. In actual fact - you may not believe this - but here is how it works:
Annual cost of a CIO
Scenario 1: the CIO
Assume you have an organization that is a Startup, Consultancy, Small scale Service provider or Product/FCMG manufacturer. This may be extended, but you get the idea. Assume, also, that you hire a CIO.
Now the CIO of course has very little in common with the entire organization, and thus is free, suppose say 30% of the time.
The CIO's salary as you've chosen to pay is in the range of [pick a pay rate for your CIO above] on a yearly basis.
The CIO's free time - 30% - thus costs the company an effective [pick a pay rate for your CIO above] on an annual basis.
Now with a more realistic estimate, the CIO can have about 40%-70% of time free, thus causing the company an effective loss of between [pick a pay rate for your CIO above] - [pick a pay rate for your CIO above] annually.
Scenario 2: the Virtual CIO (VCIO)
Assume you have an organization that is a Startup, Consultancy, Small scale Service provider or Product/FCMG manufacturer. This may be extended, but you get the idea. Assume, also, that you hire a VCIO this time.
Now naturally the VCIO very little in common with the entire organization, but is contracted for a fixed time basis - say 3 days a week.
The daily rate charged, [pick a pay rate for your CIO above] per day turns out to be about [pick a pay rate for your CIO above] (crude approximation) - but you're only hiring the chap for 3 days a week. You only pay [pick a pay rate for your CIO above] on a yearly basis - with maybe a little extra if you asked for more-than-average days in a given month.
The VCIO's free time is the VCIO's problem; thus you do not expend money (office space, allowances, PF, gratuity, company food/drink, etc), time (trying to keep a CIO busy, acounting work related to the CIO's salary, etc) and related effort.
Now with a realistic estimate, a VCIO (Depending on the company) may be hired say 52-200 days a YEAR [yes, it can vary much based on what you do]. Thus, your expense comes to [pick a pay rate for your CIO above] - [pick a pay rate for your CIO above]. Resulting in an instant saving off any unproductive time.
PLUS - the VCIO being a contract employee, costs the company nothing in terms of the additional perks that a normal employee consumes.
